FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do I need maternity clothes?
Fitted maternity clothing in the right size is the most flattering silhouette and the most comfortable. Buying regular clothes in big sizes is a common shopping mistake newly pregnant women make, but it doesn’t work because they don’t fit properly across your shoulders and back. You end up chasing your size buying bigger and bigger sizes, often spending more than if you had bought maternity clothes at the start. Plus, it just looks sloppy – not the image you want. Many women are surprised by how great contemporary maternity clothes look.

When should I start wearing maternity clothes?
When your clothes no longer fit properly. Everyone is unique. Just because someone else didn’t wear maternity clothes till her sixth month doesn’t mean your experience will be the same. Being uncomfortable is not a badge of honour. Wear what feels right for you.

How do I know what size I’ll need?
Generally, you buy maternity clothes according to your current size. Some designers have a smaller cut, so you may need to go up a size in their clothing. Twins or triplets are also likely to push you to the next size.

Will the clothes I buy now last until the end of my pregnancy?
Most women gain an average of 25-35 pounds during a pregnancy. Maternity clothes are designed to accommodate this weight gain right up to your delivery date.

How do I build a pregnancy wardrobe for the office?
Mix and match separates work well to create a variety of business outfits. Start with a neutral colour scheme for essentials such as jackets, pencil skirts and pants. Add a classic shirt and some pizzazz with lots of tops, a stylish cardigan or two and colourful accessories. Some women find dresses make an easy base for comfortable and professional looks that showcase their silhouette.

Why do I feel so hot?
Body temperature increases during pregnancy. Layers work best so you can adjust your clothing easily to different environments. Choose comfy, breathable fabrics like cottons and rayons.

Do I look fat?
You’re not fat. You’re pregnant. Embrace your sexy new pregnancy curves and show them off. It’s all about getting the right, flattering fit. Tip: V-necks have an immediate slimming effect.

Can I still wear my high heels?
Go for comfort in lower heels, especially during the last few months. Buy some cute ballet flats or a pair of kitten heels. Flat, knee high boots work well with both slim pants and skirts. Your back will thank you.

Will my low-rise jeans work through my pregnancy?
They may work early on but won’t see you through to the end. A great fitting pair of skinny or boot cut maternity jeans in a dark demin is a great investment for comfort and a flattering look.

Why should I spend money on clothes I’ll only wear for a few months?
Your maternity wardrobe is in constant use so you need good quality clothes that stand up to frequent wash and wear. It also takes a while for your body to recover postpartum, plus breastfeeding temporarily adds to your bust size. Your maternity wardrobe can see you through this transition period postpartum till you’re ready to slip into your old favourites. So invest in a few pieces you really love.

How can I dress for my cousin’s wedding without looking like the wedding cake?
A great LBD, little black dress, will see you through any occasion, no matter how glamourous. Just mix up the looks with some great accessories.

What a great casual look for going out?
